The story is written by Gerry Davis and Kit Pedler.
The story is about a group that solve scientific problems around the world.Their group is made of 5 people one of them is the director (Spencer Quist) and the others work with him hep him.Spencer Quist won a Noble prize in nuclear science.One day a plane was flying to Bogota and everything was good until everything with plastic started melting,the driver couldn't drive because it melted so they reached the aircraft it touched the ground and then went up again and went down again and explode.
The next they when they heard about the crash,they sent a man from their group to find out what happened.When he arrived he arrived he realized that the plane didn't crash because of the pilot or the people on it.It was chemical element that can melt plastic and because of the element,everything with plastic in the plane was melted and it caused the crash.So when he returned back to Doomwatch he gave the element to them and they found out that was very dangerous and went to the minister and said to stop that team that is using this kind of chemical element.The minister had to stop it because it was very dangerous.
So another day another news was showing on the TV and it was about a man who throw himself from the cliff to death.And the man was Quists friend,so the next day Quist went there to found out what happened first they though that it was a suicide,but then in that village everyday in 3 past 15 o'clock a plane that called T9 was passing from top of the village and when people hear the sound of the plane in front of their gets black everything starts burning and they get a huge shock.So when Quist realized that it happens to everyone and it needs to stop,so they met the minister and told him about the plane and about his friends death.So when they told him about the facts that it may kill many people but this time the minister couldn't believe him so they didn't stop the mission of T9 and because of that they left the village and went to Doomwatch.
One month later another accident happened.A plane that had nuclear in it crashed in the ocean and they can't find it.So the minister called Doomwatch to his office and told them about what happened to the plane and the next day they went to the nearest seaside and started searching when they found it they started to defuse the bomb but in the last minute it exploded and everywhere was on fire.After that Quist left the Doomwatch and they didn't do any mission after that explosion.
What i understood from the book is that when you want to do something and you fail you don't have to quit your job.
